How Long Do Outdoor Memorial Plaques Last?

The short answer: a laser engraved 316 marine grade stainless steel plaque should stay legible for a lifetime outdoors. The engraving is in the steel itself, so there's no paint, ink or coating to fade in the sun or wash out in the rain. That's why our memorial plaques carry a lifetime legibility warranty.
What makes a plaque fade or fail
- Paint and ink: printed or painted lettering breaks down under UV, rain and temperature swings, so names and dates slowly fade.
- The wrong metal: lower grade metals can rust or stain, especially near the coast, under sprinklers or in polluted areas.
- Coatings: once a coating cracks or peels, the plaque underneath starts to weather.
Why 316 stainless steel lasts
316 stainless has molybdenum added on top of the chromium and nickel in standard 304 stainless, which greatly improves its resistance to salt, sprinkler water and pollution. It's the metal used for boat fittings and coastal railings, so it suits beachside memorial gardens, cemetery lawns and anywhere exposed to the weather.
Our fibre laser marks the surface of the steel itself. Photos, verses and emblems stay sharp because nothing is sitting on top to wear away.
Our lifetime legibility warranty
We warrant that the engraving on your 316 stainless steel memorial plaque will stay legible and won't fade or corrode for the life of the plaque, under normal conditions of use and display. The warranty covers legibility of the engraving, not accidental damage, vandalism or misuse.
Helping it last
- Clean it with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry it. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals.
- Fix it with stainless screws or concealed studs.
- Check your cemetery's size and material rules before ordering, and send us the measurements.

Questions we often get
Will the photo on my plaque fade?
No. The photo is laser engraved into the steel in fine greyscale, not printed, so there's nothing to fade.
Is stainless steel OK at the beach?
Yes. 316 marine grade is made for salt air.
How quickly can I get one?
Most memorial plaques are ready within 48 hours of proof approval.
