Preserving Memories with Photo Engraving on Stainless Steel
A name and dates tell people who someone was. A photo shows them. That's why more and more families ask us to add a portrait to their memorial plaque. It's one of the most meaningful jobs we do in our Rutherford workshop.
The portrait above shows how much detail is possible. Every feature, line and shade of the original photo has been engraved into the stainless steel itself. There's no print or sticker on top, so the image won't fade, peel or discolour in the sun the way a paper photo or a ceramic insert can.
How photo engraving works
Our fibre laser turns your photo into thousands of tiny, precisely placed marks. Darker areas get more marks and lighter areas fewer, building up a greyscale image in the surface of the metal. Because the laser changes the steel itself rather than adding ink, the photo is as permanent as the plaque.
Before anything is engraved, we prepare the photo and send you a free proof. We'll crop it, lift the contrast, and clean up the background if needed, so you can see exactly how it will look.
Choosing the right photo
- Pick the clearest, sharpest photo you have. A phone photo is fine if it's in focus.
- Faces should be well lit, without strong shadows across the eyes.
- Head-and-shoulder shots work best. We can crop a person or a pet out of a group photo.
- Send the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a printed photo, if you can.

Why we use 316 marine grade stainless steel
316 stainless contains molybdenum on top of the chromium and nickel in everyday 304 stainless. That makes it far more resistant to salt air, sprinkler water and pollution, which is why it's used for boat fittings and coastal railings. It's the right material for a plaque that will sit outdoors for decades.
It's also why our stainless steel memorial plaques come with a lifetime legibility warranty. The engraving, photo included, will stay legible for the life of the plaque under normal conditions.

How long does a photo memorial plaque take?
Most memorial plaques are ready within 48 hours of you approving the proof. We can pick up in Rutherford or express post anywhere in Australia and New Zealand.
Can you engrave an old or damaged photo?
Often, yes. Old photos can be scanned and cleaned up. Send it through and we'll let you know honestly how it will look.
Will I see the photo before it's engraved?
Yes. You'll get a free proof with the photo and wording laid out, and nothing is engraved until you approve it.
